Program Description
The Paralegal Diploma program will provide students with the necessary foundation of knowledge, skills and behaviors required to ensure their competency for the first several years of practice as well as the awareness of the requirement to maintain competency on an on-going basis. Each course usually focuses on either legal knowledge (such as contracts or administrative law), legal skills (such as interviewing or advocacy), or an area of practice (such as small claims or criminal). Upon completion a student will have met the 303 required knowledge or skills competencies required as a minimum by the law Society as well as the competencies for the additional legal and non-legal courses.\n\nA paralegal with an L1 License from the Law Society advocates for clients in the lower courts and tribunals in the province. They have professional obligations to their clients of loyalty and competency necessary to serve their clients best interests. This requires excellent communication, presentation, analytical, problem-solving, organizational and managerial skills. Paralegals must also, at all times, be professional and ethical.\n\nA paralegal, whether self-employed or employed in an organization, performs tasks such as client interviewing, case research, client counseling, document drafting, case presentation before a judge or tribunal member, legal accounting, and negotiations.
