    Personal Support Workers (PSWs) care for people who are ill, elderly or need assistance with daily tasks. PSW’s can work in long-term care facilities, or in client’s homes as an employee of a home care agency. This position has various names such as personal aide worker, home support worker and personal care attendant. Nonetheless, they are all tasked and trained to do the same position.

    • Care for individuals and families during a period of illness and/or recovery
    • Plan, prepare meals and medication intake
    • Provide bedside and personal care. This can include, bathe, groom, getting dressed and undressed.
    • Teach new parents to care for an infant
    • Help with light housekeeping duties
    • Reporting behavioural and clinical changes for nurse and/or doctor to review.

    Personal Support Worker Training Courses

    In order to become a Personal Support Worker (PSW) in Ontario, you must pursue a PSW program and obtain a diploma from an institution that supports this type of educational path. After the 2 to 4-year college program depending on the school you choose to enroll in, you must complete and pass the Personal Support Worker Certificate exam. Once receiving the certificate, you are eligible to apply to PSW positions in Ontario.
