To start your career, employers hire those who have a high school diploma. There are no strict requirements beyond this to become a security guard. However, completing a post-secondary degree/diploma can help you open more doors in this field. An aspiring security guard can enrol in a program in law, security or public safety. These programs can be successfully completed between 2 to 3 years.
Useful Information About Being a Security Guard
In Ontario, you need to apply and successfully complete a security guard license. You can apply online or through the mail with ServiceOntario. It will take up to 10 business days to process and your license card should be mailed to you in 8 weeks. The security guard license will cost $80 and must be renewed every 2 years. Although not mandatory, it is preferred having first aid and CPR certification and a valid driving license will further your chances of getting a security job faster.
