Legal Assistant Programs Description
Legal assistants perform a variety of tasks to support lawyers, including organizing files, managing calendars, scheduling meetings, entering data into databases, basic legal research, and document creation. All of the work completed by a legal assistant is supervised by a lawyer. A good understanding of legal terminology, software, and case proceedings is required. Legal assistants may be employed in a law firm, or government or corporate legal departments. There are a variety of areas where a legal assistant can develop their career and specialize in a particular area of law; commercial, corporate, litigation, wills and estates, real estate, criminal, and family.
- Proficient written and oral communication skills are needed for this position as a legal assistant will be required to do written work and have frequent contact with lawyers and other members of a legal team.
- Legal assistants must be able to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately and act in an ethical manner.
- Attention to detail, transcription skills and the ability to accurately and carefully review documentation are key for this role.
- Proficient computer skills, excellent organization, and time management are also key for this position.
Legal Assistant Salary
An average salary is 48K per year in Canada. A more experienced legal assistant may make up to 65K.
Legal Assistant Hours
Full time and part time positions are common for this role. Overtime work may be required during busy periods.
