    Host/Hostess Programs Description

    A host or hostess is primarily responsible for greeting customers so they feel welcome in the establishment, typically a restaurant, dining room, resort, lounge or club. Other responsibilities may include answering calls, processing payments, making reservations, basic cleaning and building maintenance, and security.This career typically requires standing and walking for the majority of a shift. Hosts or hostesses are also typically required to wear a uniform or follow a dress code.

    • Great interpersonal skills are needed for this position as the majority of this role involves contact with customers and staff members. A host or hostess will typically be the first contact customers have with a business so employers are counting on their host or hostess to make a great first impression for their business.
    • Ability to stay positive, work under pressure, and manage and diffuse conflict situations are very useful for this position.
    • Basic computer skills, time management, punctuality, respectfulness, attention to detail, and good organizational skills are also important for this position.
    • Knowledge of a second language may be an asset.

    An average salary is 21K per year in Canada. A more experienced host or hostess may make up to 43K.

    Most employers will offer on-the-job training. Previous experience in a service role would be beneficial experience.
