Early Childhood Educators (ECE) are teachers who work with infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school age children. They play a vital role in the children’s social, emotional, mental, and physical development and care. ECE’s work in a variety of settings and go by numerous other titles including childcare workers, childcare assistants, and daycare workers.
Early Childhood Educator Core Task and Skills Required
An ECE is responsible for all aspects of care, development, and learning of young children in a variety of settings. During their day, they provide age-appropriate care, activities, lesson plans, and activities in a safe and healthy environment.
- Supervise children in a safe and comfortable environment
- Provide appropriate discipline
- Plan and implement stimulating, age-appropriate play and activities
- Assess the developmental needs of each child
- Develop and implement lesson plans
- Maintain a healthy emotional and social learning environment
- Report to parents and supervisors

The salary of an ECE ranges between $25,000.00 to $46,000.00.
Early Childhood Educator Hours
The hours of an ECE vary greatly depending where they work. The positions can be full or part time and can start very early in the morning or finish later in the evening. Most ECE’s work Monday to Friday but few work evenings, overnight, weekends, and holidays.
Early Childhood Educator Training Courses
Along with their formal education, ECE’s receive training on-the-job to work with children in a variety of settings. In many workplaces, they are also required to have additional training in early childhood development, first aid, health and safety, and WHMIS.
Useful Information About Being a Early Childhood Educator
ECE’s must complete a degree in early childhood education from an accredited college or have an acceptable combination of education and experience. ECE’s can also complete a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
